What is Pro-Ana-Mia?

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

I recently came across some curious terms in articles I was reading around the net, such as Pro- Ana, Pro- Mia, Thinspiration etc. I decided to investigate and what I found was not just shocking but sad as well.

  • This is forever. I will do whatever it takes. I want to be thin more than anything, even food”
  • “One day I will be thin enough. Just the bones, no disfiguring flesh. Just the pure clear shape of me, bones. That is what we all are, what we’re made up of and everything else is just storage, deposit, waste. Strip it away, use it up”
  • “Food hinders your progress”
  • “How many pounds till I am happy, how many pounds till I get thin? Three more pounds till I am skinny, three more pounds and I win!”
  • “When you coast without eating for a significant period of time, and you are still alive, you begin to scoff at those fools who believe they must eat to live. It is blatantly obvious to you that this is not true”

How scary is this! Continue Reading…

Eating Disorders among Celebrities

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

While the statistic of 5 to 7% American women having eating disorders is a well known one, what is also fairly well known is the fact that this disorder born out of an obsession to be thin afflicts celebrities as well. Many celebrities have suffered from all kinds of eating disorders pursuant to the pressure to be thin. The mortality rate for those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa is approximately 6%—the highest of any mental illness—with roughly half of those due to suicide. This is another shocking statistic. Shocking and scary! Continue Reading…

The Winsome Kate Winslet

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

I have seen the movie Titanic, several times. I am fairly sure that is the case with a lot of people around the world. After all it is the highest grossing film of all time. An all out romantic love story, it catapulted its leading lady Kate Winslet into the limelight. What I find very interesting about Kate Winslet is her frank refusal to conform to a Hollywood ideal of thinness, in spite of the concentrated media attention on her size, her weight and her dimensions.
