Of Grandfathers and the Passing of Eras

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

I got a mail from Nancy early this morning telling me of the sad demise of her grandfather who had long been struggling with cancer of the colon. It was obvious from her words that he was a person who had had a very strong influence in her life as a spiritual mentor and as a well beloved family patriarch. In her mail Nancy quoted one of her grandfather’s favorite quotes. “they’re ALL crazy out there, be careful of the BULLSHIT!” … which I thought indicated what a feisty and interesting character he must have been.

What Nancy’s mail did was Continue Reading…

Why Thin Is Not In, Revisited

Something I read recently reinforced Nancy’s view of “Thin is not In…” This article I read just a couple of days back seems to indicate that there is a small but perceptible shift of perceptions in the fashion industry and the ‘heroin chic’ look that has dominated a lot of the catwalks the world over is perhaps on the wane. The article talks about how at the New York Fashion week, models are no longer just a size 0, and are now up to sizes 2 and 4. Still not anywhere near a normal sized woman, but the absence of the anorexic look marks what may well be a paradigm shift in the world of modeling.

While there were fewer numbers of jutting collarbones and visible ribs on display there were more curves and smiles to be seen. The fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar opined that this was a healthier ‘look’ and that “We’re obviously going through a season of a less cookie cutter look.” Continue Reading…

Instant Nirvana

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

For one or another reason, I had been feeling a bit down in the past few days and was looking for a way to break out of the down turn that my usually sunny spirits had taken. I usually find by solace in books etc., but this time my usual favorites failed to bring cheer.

I then decided to make a survey of an old box of music CDs that remained packed and unopened in a corner of the house, since we shifted here almost a year ago. I had not seen or heard them literally in years. They were my classical music collections, which I seemed not to have found time for in recent times what with how crazy busy life has been in the recent past. Continue Reading…

What does Spirituality Mean….

by Reena Daruwalla, guest writer for Nancy Hayssen.com

…To me and to you?

I am not a very religious person, I am not even sure that I believe in God in the sense of a super-being who creates and controls everything and wreaks retribution swiftly and brutally. I think I am more of a pantheist, who sees God in nature and think of nature as God.

7 Days to Less Stress - More Peace of Mind

1. Write Out Your Thoughts
Just scribble out what is bothering you or any thoughts weighing down your mind. Keep writing for 15 minutes in a journal.

2. Just Breathe
It’s amazing how a day can go by and we forget to breathe. Slow-ly breathe IN and OUT. In and Out. In and Out. You get the idea.

3. Listen to Your Body
Where is the tension in your body? Is your back tightening up? Your jaw clenched? Your body stiff all over? Your body will tell you where you need to let go. Release the tension by letting go.

4. Say a Mantra
Repeat a word you like, like “Love”. Each time you exhale for 10 minutes you’ll do away with stressful thoughts.

5. Picture Beauty
Imagine a soothing scene. The beautiful sounds, images and smell. The more beautiful and serene the picture in your mind, the more tension will dissipate.

6. Lie in Bed
Wake up just a few minutes early and lay in bed. Just be.

7. Just BE
Live in the now… it’s the only moment you got!
